Cheryl D. Stein has been in private practice in Washington, D.C. since 1982, with a strong emphasis on criminal defense. She has resided in the nation’s capital since 1978. Ms. Stein grew up in the New York suburbs and graduated first in her class from George W. Hewlett High School in 1970. In September 1970, at the age of 16, she enrolled at Yale University, part of the second class of women admitted after Yale College became co-educational. She received a B.A. degree in 1974, magna cum laude, with departmental honors in French literature. She retains a facility in both written and spoken French. Attending the University of Chicago Law School immediately after college, Ms. Stein was selected for the Law Review on the basis of her class standing. At the end of her first year, she transferred to Yale Law School – one of only two candidates accepted for transfer out of 75 applications received. She graduated and received her J.D. degree from Yale Law School in 1977.
Ms. Stein relocated to Washington, D.C., after her graduation from law school. After five years of work in the fields of transportation and communications law, she opened her own law office in order to pursue her interest in criminal defense and to ensure that her clients would receive representation that would live up to her exacting standards. Since she started practicing criminal law in 1982 she has represented over 1000 people accused of crimes ranging from shoplifting to murder. Ms. Stein also has extensive experience in the field of contracts. She negotiates and drafts contracts both for individuals and for small businesses and provides representation in court and at arbitration hearings for parties involved in contract disputes.
